a new 98 custom thread

okay. same story different day. accept i dont have to plan out a complete gun

i already have a 14" BT ak47 apex barrel. and a tapco olive folding stock ( which i may be selling because i cant aim down my sights with my mask in and it folded out )

any suggestions on turning it into a AK47 replica? and maybe a scope if possible.

im all ears

Re: a new 98 custom thread

Guys, Nebotec was asking for help on CPB and a lot of the answers he got were "sell it and get a SmartParts Ion". I told him there were plenty of guys on this forum who could give him some good ideas on modding his 98. So any help you can offer would be appreciated.

I would suggest polishing the internals, it is almost free and improves performance. Are you familiar with the process?

Other than turning it into an AK replica what are you looking to do? You have the front end of an AK it sounds like, do you have any photos? Are you looking for performance upgrades or cosmetic?

Re: a new 98 custom thread

I'd go with the short krinkof look, with a sling, contractor style. Few stocks will let you look down the sights with a mask.

Re: a new 98 custom thread

+1 for polishing internals. Altho I've heard that it may reveal some imperfections in the metal (right TGD?)

+1 for the Krinkof look.
The 98 is small and compact, and great for runnin and gunnin.

If you can upgrade to the cyclone too, it's handy for putting the squatty X7 hopper on and reducing your profile.

This is a great upgrade for the 98, lowers the profile and eliminates chopping. RodentX had one on his 98.

I do have to say Nebotech, I have been seeing A5's sell for close to $100 lately. It is $50 to buy the cyclone from Tippmann. It might be worth it to buy an A5 that already has the cyclone and to sell your 98, just a though if you go down that road.

The down side is you would have to start all over on your AK look you want.

Re: a new 98 custom thread

looks like we have a lot of good ideas.

im not familiar with polishing internals but i know the gun could use it and some lube.

the a5 idea is a good one. but after id buy the a5 + cyclone. id have to go find a ak barrel for it. plus the one i already have is apex so i think ill stay with it. ( easiest 30 dollars i ever spent )

chopping is a big problem with me because even on a single trigger. i replaced the spring with one from a pen so its pretty sensitive. i end up shooting faster then a shake and shoot can feed ( which isint hard for anyone ) . so the cyclone feed ill have to look into

what about rails / scopes. any ideas there anyone?

im looking for both cosmetic and performance upgrades. the ak47 apex barrel did both.
----checklist----
  • polish internals
  • cyclone feed
  • lube
  • 2-pt sling
  • ( to be continued )

Definitely sounds like a good start to your list. Polishing the internals is easy, I'll try to find a tutorial... I used my dremel or you can use sand paper. And you will love the cyclone. I'll get back to you about the sight.

I suggest this sling, I just bought one.

Re: a new 98 custom thread

I used fine steel wool to "polish" the halves of all of the guns that I have owned. It basically takes off the over spray from were the front and rear bolts slide to give them a smoother surface to slide on.

As Mr.M stated the thing that I have found is that it does tend to reveal some of the imperfections in the metal but that hasn't seemed to create any issues.

I just got another 98 and polished the internals on it a week or so ago and found that it is not recocking like it should... (I get 2 or three shots then I have to manually recock it.) I think that it is because the o-rings need replaced and cleaning it like that created more blow-by on the rear bolt not allowing it enough pressure to recock. BUT I did not test the gun before polishing to see if it worked because I was out of air... moral of that story is to make sure you have an extra o-rings and air on hand.

Don't worry about it, CO2 is fine. I use it sometimes still, and if you use a remote it acts as an expansion chamber. If you are on a budget don't worry about the HPA unless you play a lot of winter ball.

And I wouldn't waste your money on anything less than a 68/4500, but that is just from my experience.

Re: a new 98 custom thread

Yeah, I agree with Fets on the air and that bungie sling. I would focus on performance upgrades then maybe add an ak mag.

Re: a new 98 custom thread

ive come to a conclusion that im not going to put sight rails and /or a scope on it. 1 ball would put me 50 - 100 dollars down the drain on a scope.
the mag kit would be more for looks, but im also going to do that after i get the performance ups. as for the sling, im deciding between a 2 pt sling or a single pt. the gun seems to be to big for a single point one though. a remote line ive onsidered and am still debating on. on the field ive gone to ( in my experience ) i end up laying down on my back on the side of a small hill. with a remote line that would be a little hard to do, but for the ligthness it might be a good sacrifice.

---List---
sling
remote line ( possibly )
polished internals
lubed
cyclone feed
mag kit ( afterwards )

---cost--- (estimated)
sling - (20 - 30)
remote line (20)
polished internals ( practically free )
lube ( few dollars? )
cyclone feed ( 50 - 60 )
mag kit ( 50 - 60 )
total cost-----(140 - 160?)

Good call on holding off on the sight. As for the remote line... it isn't for everyone. If you are happy playing without one then stick with it. It does make the gun lighter and easier to handle though.

Re: a new 98 custom thread

with a remote line i get lightness but cant lay back. without it my gun is heavier but i can get a sling to put the weight on my shoulders instead.

so ill probably go with a 2 point sling. maybe get a remote line offhand depending on the field.

with all of these upgrades ll need a gearbag. i can probably get a duffel bag at the thrift store for under 15 dollars. if i found a realtree jacket there for 3.50 i think i can find alot more.
