Winter Problems
Like most at this site I'm sort of a paintball freak except for the fact that I lack the knowledge of certain obsticals. I love the game, but somtimes the things that go wrong during the winter realy piss me off. For one thing, no matter how much I try my mask always fogs up in the cold and leaves me as blind as a bat. The only way I can see is by lifting up th efront of my mask slightly and look to see where my advosary is and slide my mask back down and either shoot in the general dirrection or charge. Another thing that realy makes me mad is the fact that the cold messes with your CO2 tanks. In the middle of a fire fight, the tank just sort of quits on you , leaving you their to either A. surrender, B. retreat covering your hind end. Or C. Stand their and stair stupidly at your tank that defenitly is not empty. Although their are more horrble things that can possibly happen, such as falling into a river, there are too many things that can happen to write down, and since differnt things happen to differnt people, I ask what realy pisses you off in the winter

Re: Winter Problems
Invest in an HPA compressed Air Tank, and you will not have the problems you have using CO2 in the winter. CO2 is horrible to use in the winter.
As for your mask, if you have not already done so, remove the visor from the mask. It will allow the heat from your face to escape better. Also, get a thermal lens. If a thermal lens is not available for your goggles, you should consider investing in a new pair like JT, V-Force, or Vents that have thermal lenses. Several goggles also offer fan kits to go on top to prevent fogging... JT, PRoto, and Dye each have these. Under no circumstances should you ever lift your goggles up and expose your face during a game. Even if you can't see a freaking thing, DO NOT REMOVE YOUR GOGGLES!!! You ask what people hate about winter paintball.... for me, it's people who remove their goggles during the game! |

Re: Winter Problems
My mask actually fogs less in the winter because I stay cooler usually. It sounds like you probably have either a cheap mask or an old lense that needs replaced.
I know money is always tight, but just buy a good mask and you will be sooooo much happier playing year round. You can get a JT Flex or a V-Force Shield really cheap and they work well. I finally got away from CO2 myself because it was so unreliable in the winter. Running a remote with an x-chamber does help in my experience. My biggest complaint tends to be field paint, if I buy some Frostbite or some Polar Ice I know it will work well. Last weekend I was laying on my pods in the snow and they were frozen but I had zero breaks all day with my A5. But I hate going to fields and having to use their crap formula paint in the winter and just breaking all day. I do enjoy playing in the snow, you can walk so much quieter it is fun and camo is pretty effective in the winter if done correctly. I do have to agree with Mike, the one time you lift your mask to look around is when someone plants a ball right there and you are blind the rest of your life. If you can't see just head for the net and clean your mask and wait for next game. Use some anti-fog or buy a better mask. |

Re: Winter Problems
I play one time every winter to remind myself how much I hate playing in the winter!

Re: Winter Problems
I get where you guys are coming from with the risk of taking off your mask, but I don't play at feilds, and somtimes the land scape is not as clear as it seems, I once about fell into a river due to the lack of sight, snow, stte hill side, and being plastered. I thank you for you rconsideration and advice, and I'll look into getting a new mask.

Re: Winter Problems
Doesn't matter if you are playing at a field or somewhere else... if you are playing paintball... keep your mask on.

Re: Winter Problems
I just said I would, and when I said I don't play at a field, I was refering to Fetts statement of gong to a net to clean it there is no nets.

But I think once you get a better mask you will find it isn't a big deal because you won't have nearly as much trouble with fogging. |

Re: Winter Problems
Sounds like a good idea, I'll try and initiate it the next time we play. I'll have to find a full proof measure though to prevent anyone from using it to get out of a tight spot.

Re: Winter Problems
Man there is some great advice here. Switch from co2 to hpa was best thing i did. Cheap hpa tank isn't but 20 bucks more than 20oz co2 tank. I would also say try thermal lense or a fan setup. I hooked my own fan up with stuff from radio shack. A cpu fan, 9 volt battery, and w/ switch.
And the advice about mask on at all times i am sure is all these great people looking out for a fellow player and the sport we love. A friend got shot in the eyes years ago and got lucky didn't lose sight but couldn't see straight for a couple days. Man was I glad to see so many post looking out for anothers safety. good luck |
