The caliber question

Well, it looks like the caliber might be changing for paintball. SO far the bids on the table are .43 caliber from Spyder and .50 caliber from Smart Parts. What do you guys think about these "new" calibers and how they'll effect the game and the industry?

I think it's great. We'll hopefully get better paint, and more for the dollar. The big question for me is, will they be able to sell conversion kits to mod existing markers and if they do will .68 caliber be obsolete?

For now I think this is either going to turn into a total fail or begin a race the likes of which resemble the HD-DVD versus Blu-ray battle.

Re: The caliber question

they will just have both. they are not just going to say piss on the 68 cal guns and paint. they'll just have both. not really a big deal.

Re: The caliber question

I don't think a conversion for the tippmans would be that difficult.

Re: The caliber question

I am all for .50 caliber, I have said many times what I think the benefits are for us woodsballers. I really hope to see it come to market.

Re: The caliber question

Can someone enlighten as to pros/cons of .43/.50/.68? I figure .68 would have the furthest range due to mass, but if you increase velocity that shouldn't be an issue. Course if you increase velocity you might lose some accuracy? not sure. If they would make conversions it'd be great cause you could practice with low cal pball and then compete with .68. I know RAP4 has been .43 cal for a long time.

Advantages include lower cost to produce, and increased capacity for magazine fed markers. Those are two of the biggest advantages.

Of course you can't keep it to a 300 FPS rule because the lower mass would mean less distance out of the smaller paintball. I don't have the calculations but I have seen where a .43 caliber paintball at 450 FPS has the same energy on impact as a .68 caliber paintball does at 300 FPS.

Now from shooting .43 caliber I know they are less accurate because the wind really affects them, but I would be curious how well a .50 caliber does to balance weights/size/etc...

It is really silly that paintballs are an enormous .68 caliber I think, there is so much waste when I am sure a .50 caliber would leave a big enough mark to know if someone is out. And you could have smaller hoppers and better mag fed markers.

This is all my opinion of course.

Re: The caliber question

I was reading on a site that offered powder filled balls. It also talked about dimpling the paintballs similar to a golf ball so that the ball would spin.

I'm thinking that modifications to the .68 paintball might be a little more practical than introducing a new size.

Doesn't help with the magazine fed marker problem though.

Also, Tiberus tried to improve the paintball and no one seems to want to adapt it. Few fields are allowing it, Tiberus is trying to charge and arm and a leg for the damn things.

I know a guy who shot some of those sniper rounds from his Tac8, man those things are accurate. He was getting 8-9/10 shots ball on ball at over 150 feet. The spread of the 12 in. target was never more then 1 or two inches away he said.

As for the size and accuracy, I think it might actually improve. Airsoft guns shoot a MUCH smaller projectile, but I find them to be much more accurate then any paintball gun, including space guns.

Re: The caliber question

True, but what's the mass of the bb's? I think they're rated like .2gm or .28gm or something compared to pballs which are ??? Don't know, be an interesting comparison.

Honestly for milsim I think any size would do. The problem I have with airsoft is that hits are on the honor system so people sometimes have a tendency to "play" through instead of call themself out. Course they get bonus balled just like in pball.
