A Challenge to All....
Well, as some of you know, I've been getting myself into shape in the past few months. A lot of people have asked me what my goal is out of all of this. While losing weight has been great, the bigger benefits have been health related. Still...people seem to want to know why I am doing all of this.
Well, I've given it a lot of thought, and here's what I've come up with. My sister in the past 5 years has completed several marathons, triathlons, and even a 50 mile Ultra Marathon. She is 5 years older than me, and I've been very inspired by her. She called me the other day to let me know she is going to come to Cleveland to do the Cleveland Marathon again on May 19th, 2009. Now, before you start thinking crazy here...just know, I have no intention of trying to run the marathon...lol. What I do intend to do is run the 10k (6.2 mile) event on the same date. That has become my goal for the next 7 months. To RUN the event... not walk...not run and walk...but run the event, and finish it. So, with that, I am throwing out a challenge to everyone to join me in this endeavor. I've already lost nearly 60 pounds since my broken ankle finished healing in April. If I can do this, and I will, then there is NO EXCUSE as to why anyone else can't do this. The Cleveland Marathon 10K is a flat course. From the starting line, the course only goes up 10 feet and down 10 feet from the starting sea level. So, it's an easy race in terms of elevation. Here is a link to the site... Home - The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K The main page has a countdown clock...as of today there are 219 days left... so plenty of time for everyone to commit and train for this. So there ya have it.. that's my challenge. Any takers? |

Man... I really hate running long distance. Yet, I am very interested in committing to this race with you because I think having a goal like that would push me to work out & train.
I need to give it some thought, but I am leaning towards doing it. I just want to make sure if I say I am going to do it that I am truley committed. |

I am interested. I have been working for the last 10 months on my stamina and endurance.
I would only be interested in the 10k though. Marathons are out of the question, my body has been limited my genetics. And I have never done more than 4 miles in a single run.

Alright...that's two potential people. Anyone else?
And yes Phiber, there's no way in hell I'm considering a marathon. Just looking at doing the 10K. |

Re: A Challenge to All....
Well, I am also leaning towards doing this. I have to check the schedule, maybe I'll ask my boss. If I ask this far ahead I should be in the clear.
I used to be a cross-country runner but haven't run anything that far in about 13 years so I guess I'm due! If I commit to this, I'm not planning on running to compete, but rather run to gauge myself 1)Can I still do it 2) How fast can I reasonably do it Has anyone done a run like this before? Even a 5k?

Re: A Challenge to All....
Not sure about anyone else, but I haven't. I used to run 5 miles a day at soccer practice in high school 17 years ago...down a mountain and back up it... pretty much sucked. I haven't run a distance even close to that since... for obvious reasons.
I was actually thinking of looking for a 5K event in early April to use as a practice event for the 10k. Personally, all I want out of this is the gratification of knowing I completed the event and all of the physical and health benefits along the way as I train for it. I'm not even concerned about times...basically, just run it and finish it is the goal. |

Re: A Challenge to All....
My whole thing is knowing how fast I ran it. Then if I'm at a paintball field or hiking or whatever I'll have a good gauge as to how far/how long I can make it to places.
Yeah soccer's another good excersize, I never played though. Small school, CC or football and at 6' 140# football was kind of out of the question...
