Looking to buy a gun in the near future
I'm looking to buy a gun in the near future and was wondering what recommendations you guys have. I am looking at getting a pistol, possibly with a CCP, and a shotgun.
I really have no clue what companies and models are good for beginners and don't know what caliber I should get. The main points I am looking at in the gun would be ease of maintenance and reliability. I have heard good things about glocks and H&K pistols for this. I know most of you own guns, what do you suggest?

Re: Looking to buy a gun in the near future
I am really liking the Walther PPS for concealed carry (don't have one, but want one), or if you have the money a compact 1911 would be a great choice. Not a big fan of Glocks myself, love my S&W M&P (just wish I had gotten compact version).
Try to stay at least 9MM or above for a carry pistol, stay away from the .38 and .32 ACP. Lots of good choices on shotguns, what will you use the shotgun for? |

shotgun would be for home defense
For the pistol, about how much would Walther or the 1911 cost?

Re: Looking to buy a gun in the near future
You are looking at a minimum of $500 for a good CCW pistol new.
For the shotgun the Mossberg 500 is available in a pistol grip with 18" barrel that makes a nice home defense weapon. Be sure to get it in 12 ga of course. This is a rather cheap shotgun, Remington makes a nice one as well. Go into a gun shop and check out some pistols then come back and let us know which ones you liked. That might be a good starting point. |

Re: Looking to buy a gun in the near future
Depends on what brand. My dad got a Kimber Custom Carry II and it was $$$. I like the Taurus models, the PPS, and the XDm, but have only had the chance to shoot assorted S&Ws and the Kimber.

I am not a fan of the XD's but they are popular. Thing with the XD or M&P concealed carry versions is that they are still pretty thick because of the double stacked mags. I want a thinner pistol like the PPS. |

Re: Looking to buy a gun in the near future
If it's strictly for CCW then I agree on the slimness factor. I've found that the Custom .45 is too short for me to keep on target. It rolls back or something- don't know.
I shot my AR this last weekend at my parents house with my new Magpul MBUS and without my glasses put 5 out of 5 rounds within 6" at 75 yards. Very happy with these results. I attribute it to as much the ammo as the site. It's conviinced me that I might want to get a set for whatever paintball gun I make my primary.

Re: Looking to buy a gun in the near future
I am personally going to get an XDm in the near future. Not for CCW yet.
I have shot two already and I like them very much. I like the thinness of a 1911 but its a little long for ccw. I am not expert but there are my two cents. You can also buy online and have them sent to a local dealer. They will charge you a transfer fee.

Just look up one near you and go talk to them, most gun shops are full of very knowledgeable people.

''''Disclaimer; I am in no way an expert'''''
I love my M&P .40. Shoots great, you can find them relatively cheap, simple to tear down and clean. For concealed, I was looking into Sigs. Yes, a .45 will be more effective, but a .32 or .38 will be in a much smaller package. You really need to go look at, hold, and shoot the ones that interest you. Usually, 1911s are quality guns, therefore command a quality price. XDs feel strange to me, however I like the XDm. Also, don't rule out revolvers. They are usually a smaller package for CC. |

Re: Looking to buy a gun in the near future
What you want in a CCW is stopping power. .32 and .38 are iffy. Personally I'd go with a .45.

As for caliber, it is an endless debate. I have done a lot of reading on the subject and personally believe that .32 or .38 is too small of a round. I also think that .45 is too expensive to shoot enough to be familiar with your CCW weapon, so you won't get in enough practice if you get a .45. Also .45 is going to limit your ammo capacity in a small CCW gun, where a 9mm or .40 will give you a nice balance of higher capacity and good stopping power. A 9mm with the right JHP will be very effective in killing bad guys. .40 is probably the perfect balance in a CCW weapon but again it is going to be expensive to shoot compared to a 9mm, so look at how much range time you can get with it. Regardless of the caliber being familiar with your weapon is the absolute most important aspect. You want to be able to hit a target moving towards you with a double tap with both eyes open in a reasonable time. It takes practice and you have to be able to afford to practice! |

Re: Looking to buy a gun in the near future
Actually karnokr along with Ender are the reason I got my M&P. I just wish I had gotten the compact version. =/
Though once ammo prices come down a little I want to shoot some competition with my full size 9. |
